August's Birthstone ~ Spinel
In 2016, the spinel was added as a birthstone for August. The spinel is most commonly found in red and blue. This versatile gemstone can also be found in a wide variety of other colors, such as black, violet blue, greenish blue, grayish, bright pink, pale pink, mauve, yellow, bright orange or brown.
The spinel is often assumed to be other gemstones because it tends to resemble either a ruby or sapphire. In fact, some of the most famous rubies in history have turned out to be spinel. But, its distinguishing features, like its octahedral crystal structure and single refraction are what set it apart from other gemstones.*
Spinel rate 8 on the Mohs hardness scale and are good in toughness, making it a durable gem for jewelry. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, clean your spinel jewelry with mild soap and water.

August Birthstones: Peridot
Peridots have long been admired for their vivid green color. They can range in color from yellowish-green to brownish-green. The ancient Romans nicknamed them the "emerald of the evening" because they do not change color in artificial light.
Peridots are one of the few gemstones that can only be found in one color. The intensity of the color depends on how much iron is contained in the crystal structure. They are typically found in rocks created by volcanoes or in meteors.
Legend states that peridots could bring good luck, peace and success to the wearer. It has also been rumored that they ward off evil spirits by giving off a glow at night.
Peridots rate 6.5-7.0 on the Mohs Hardness scale which means they are susceptible to being scratched, so it is best to store them away from other jewelry. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, clean your peridot jewelry with mild soap and water.

The Importance of Jewelry Maintenance & Repair
Most of us have swapped our daily wear jewelry for our summer jewelry wardrobe in order to protect fine items from sunscreen, tanning lotion, salt and pool water and the sun itself. This is a good time to bring your jewelry in for inspection, repair and for a good cleaning.
Why is this important? There are several jewelry maintenance issues that if not addressed, can lead to lost precious items:

Bent or loose prongs
Rings that have become too big or too small
Loose or missing side and accent stones
Worn or bent shanks
Worn clasps

These are just a few of the repair and maintenance issues we will look for when you bring your jewelry in for us to inspect. We are here to help you keep your valued items safe. We can also provide a professional cleaning before you wear or store your jewelry.
